Gatesville is an unincorporated town in Hamblen Township, Brown County, Indiana. Two legends persist about the origin of its name. One says it was founded by a fellow named either David or William Gates. The other says that it was founded as Hamblen, Indiana and was a prosperous community until 1917 when the county surveyor discovered that the main thoroughfare into town was on private land. The landowner immediately sat up a gate and began collecting tolls. When an alternate road was finally built, it was named the Spearsville-Gatesville Road in jest. However, the new name stuck and was affixed to the old community of Hamblen.
